Payday Super
Payday Super is active. Is your payroll setup fully compliant?
What Is Payday Super?
Before July 1, 2026, employers were only required to calculate and pay Superannuation Guarantee (SG) contributions quarterly. Under the active Payday Super system, super contributions must be paid at the same time employees receive their wages.
Instead of making four delayed super payments per year, businesses are now legally required to clear contributions every single pay run. These funds must successfully land in the employee’s designated account within 7 business days of payday.

What Changed on 1 July 2026?
Now that the transition window has concluded, the ATO is monitoring employers under several newly enacted operational compliance parameters:
Super Contributions Paid Alongside Wages
Whenever employees are paid, their super obligations must simultaneously be processed.
Shift to ‘Qualifying Earnings’ (QE)
Super calculations are no longer restricted to Ordinary Time Earnings (OTE). The 12% contribution rate must now be calculated against the broader ‘Qualifying Earnings’ standard reported in real-time through Single Touch Payroll (STP).
7-Business-Day Delivery Enforcement
The standard for compliance has shifted from quarterly reporting to ongoing, immediate tracking. You have a maximum of 7 business days from the date of the wage payment for the super to fully clear into the recipient’s fund. (Note: You get a 20-business-day grace period for a new hire’s first payment or fund change).
Uncompromising ATO Tracking via SuperStream 3.0
The ATO tracks payment alignment dynamically using SuperStream 3.0 frameworks. Any variance between your STP payroll submission date and the super fund’s receipt date may trigger automated alerts.
Closure of the SBSCH
The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH) officially shut down on 30 June 2026. If you haven’t migrated to a fast, commercially integrated electronic clearing network, your payments will miss the strict 7-day window.
How Payday Super Affects Your Cash Flow
Many small and medium-sized businesses previously relied on retaining quarterly super allocations to protect working capital liquidity. Under the active system, that is no longer possible. Super funds leave your business account concurrently with every single wage run, demanding highly precise cash flow forecasting.
Don’t let frequent Super payments strain your cash flow. Partner with our local Wollongong team for automated, audit-proof payroll processing services that help ensure total compliance with current ATO rules.
The Severe Penalties of Late Super Payments
Because superannuation tracking is now fully automated and instantaneous, the consequences for missed deadlines are severe:
Automated Super Guarantee Charge (SGC)
Missing the 7-day cutoff automatically subjects the business to the SGC framework.
Non-Deductible GIC Interest
Late payments may trigger punitive daily compounding interest calculated at the ATO’s General Interest Charge (GIC) rate.
Administrative Surcharges
The ATO enforces administrative penalty uplifts up to 60% of the shortfall amount based on processing history.
Loss of Interest Deduction
While on-time contributions under the QE system are completely tax-deductible, accrued late penalties, administration fees, and SGC interest charges are completely non-deductible, creating an immense, direct financial loss for the business.
